Great Zimbabwe was the capital of a powerful kingdom between the 11th and 15th centuries, built from granite blocks without mortar. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important places in African history.
Walk through the Great Enclosure and its conical tower, climb to the Hill Complex for the view, and see the soapstone birds in the site museum. Nearby, Lake Mutirikwi and Kyle View are a quiet place to rest, eat and watch the sun go down.
